The Tech Nut at IIT-G : Chapter 1 September 26, 2008

Posted by The Nut in : Me, Symposiums , trackback

This was the big one. Let me first fill you in, on how the hell I managed to wind up there.

I need to rewind several months. I was jubilant, because I’d qualified for the second round of the Junior Science Talent Examination, 2008. The teacher we were coordinating with, was Vivek sir (that’s not a mistake, we do share the same first name), of the Physics department. Anyway, explaining the JSTS episode would take another round of posts, so forget it. Anyway, Vivek sir told me and some others that an aptitude test of sorts was being conducted by IIT, Guwahati. IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology and if you didn’t know that, you must be exceedingly dumb, and ought to boil you head.

Anyway, the first round was an IQ test of sorts, and it required a team of 3. Now, let me introduce to you, a very good friend of mine – Aishwarya Gulati – who, like me, also qualified for the JSTS interviews. Since we had been in touch the past few weeks, and me having realised that the other was bloody brainy, we decided we would be in the same team. We now needed a third member.

Vivek sir gave me the responsibility of finding the people interested in the test, in class X, and create groups and give him the list. Thing is, it was like a chain reaction, and soon we had way too many names with us, but soon, everyone wanted to come along.

Also, there was another guy who qualified for the JSTS, Vedant Dubey, who was very keen on joining me and Aishwarya. Thing is, we were equally keen on not letting him join. I wouldn’t want to say anything that might be slanderous, but let’s just say that we didn’t like his character too much.

To be honest, I wanted Karthick. We go for way too many competitions together to not wind up being in the same team in a team event. But I didn’t want to say this out loud, because Aishwarya should have an equal say in the matter. Eventually, it was she who recommended Karthick. And that was that, he was in.

The team was complete.

I then remember running around, trying to convince other people to pair up with people they didn’t want to. Boring, but necessary. Eventually we got together quite a few teams.

Same day, in the break, we were all supposed to go to the Physics lab, where the guys from IIT would be ready to register us. Enter Ankur Tyagi…tall, deep voiced dude. Unfortunately, I forgot the other dude’s name.

Ankur was the first IITian I’d seen from IIT-G.

By the way, don’t get carried away thinking that the entire event at Guwahati was for schoolkids. The entire event hosted by IIT was called Techniche, which had robotics, lectures, blah, and Technothlon, the event for schools.

Fast forward to the day before the exam – spent most of the day solving IQ tests.

Exam day. We all turned up at Vasant Valley School, Vasant Kunj, which was the New Delh centre. There were quite a few people from my class – Ponnappa, Smriti, Gaurav, Unnayan and Shikhar. The test turned out to be less of IQ, and a bit more of everything else. Nice. Anyway, there were not too many questions we left unanswered. Aishwarya, Karthick and me were a bit doubtful. There were some teams which had done quite better than us. Then, there was the agonising wait till the 8th of August for the results. Groan.

I’d like to give you guys a questions I liked, partially because I answered it! There are 3 switches outside a room, which correspond to 3 bulbs inside the room, in an order you do not know. You can go through the door only once, and are supposed to find out which switch is for which bulb. You can switch the bulbs on and off in any combination.

For the last question, you can switch 1 for 30 minutes, one for 15 and one for 10.

Go inside and touch the bulbs, the hottest is on for the longest and so on…

@ Kaveh – Thanks for reaffirming what my blog’s title says…the nerdiest. About the photo…ya sure…when I come of age, I’ll think about it, but then I really don’t dig matrimonials. By the way, my so called ‘nice comments’ consist of us not liking him. Nothing more, nothing less. I think it’s only right that I can say what I feel on my blog. I agree, Vedant’s a realy talented guy all right, but it’s just that we don’t click that’s all.

P.S. I’m not on Orkut.

Of course my reply’s evasive, I’m not an aggressive type. Feel free to harbour feelings of any kind towards my bum, rest assured it will be unaffected.

By the way, I think the ‘LOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!’, in your first comment could have been replaced with more devilish ‘Muhahahahaha’, or something…just my opinion…;)
